Archaeological Area and the Visiting&Documentation Centre of Carsulae
The archaeological area and the“U. Ciotti” Visiting and Documentation Centre of Carsulae are in the Municipality of Terni and near the Municipality of San Gemini, 20 minutes far (by car) from the Marmore Falls.
It is a Roman town, and was born on the calcareous plateau, in a area rich of springs, crossed from 220 BC. From the western branch of the via Flaminia, that became important for economic resources and for the traffic and also considered the element that founded the town for having hosted populations disseminated around the territory: the water that flow underground, had a central role for the fortune of the town, as testifies also many cisterns found.

In the urban area is now visible the central part, that corresponds with the forum, that are the twin temples, probably dedicated to Castor and Pollux. The via Flaminia is the cardo massimo of the town and crosses the town up to the forum, dividing it from the basilica.

To the north is visible the so called Arch of S. Damiano, originally corresponded with an access door of the town, after whose there is the Necropolis with the monumental tombs of the Imperial period, and today two monumental tombs.

The east side of the town, finally, hosts exhibition buildings, the theatre and the amphitheatre.
Because of the absence of walls, today is difficult to think about the original extension of the town.

The republican period of the town is that less known; we know about the building of the monuments during the Augustan age.

The last epigraphic document s dated back to the IV sec. AD and after this date we have the silence, both in the literary sources and the epigraphic ones, these data linked to the material came back of different period of abandon that covered the structures during the last excavation campaigns near the Arch of S. Damiano, that give back ceramic fragments dated back to the end of the III and the IV sec. AD. The abandon contributed to the decline of the western branch of the via Flaminia, that since the IV sec. BC was gradually substituted by that east ones.
After the excavation campaigns did by U. Ciotti between the ’50 and the ’70 years of the last yeaan industrial quarter of the town, the new excavations of 2012 by the north-east area of the town and still ongoing, brought to light some structures that are at least three different building phases included between the republic and ancient period and the IV sec. BC: a series of productive and commercial buildings and maybe industrial quarter located in the north side of the area.

The “U. Ciotti” Visiting and Documentation Centre hosts several finds brought to light during the excavation campaigns of the last years, beyond the ticket-office, a library, a conference room “C. Perissinotto”, and a room for didactical activities. Inside the archaeological area is also possible to visit another small museum where see the last finds that are under restoration and cataloguing.

One of the most stimulating and interesting aspects, also for the archaeologists, is that the 90% of the town is still underground, and waits to be brought to light.
