La Specola and the Rainbow
Auspiciis et … Imperio / Pio VI P.O.M. / Ut Prope Ag Tuto Velini Lapsus In
Subiectam Narem / Conspici Possit / Aperta Semita Munitia Latera … Extructa
Specula / Decreto VI Virorum Interamnatum Nahartum / Anno 1781

The inscription that is in the fronton of the Specola, the arcaded loggia built by Pope Pius VI in 1781 near the viewpoint preferred by the travellers of the Grand Tour. It is a little building at ends of theUpper Outlook of the Falls where you can see a wonderful sight of the first drop.

It is the most beautiful place to observe the rainbow of Marmore, a visible phenomena when it createsparticular weather condition linked to the presence of the water vapor. A spectacle extolled by travelers of the Grand Tour like one of the wonders of the world. Many of them tell about the rainbows of unusual shape, or a circle almost complete. The several reproductions made by painters and printmakers,rainbow is presented like an integral part of the landscape.

The noise of the water is such that finishes to strain the hearing;
the vapor that elevates from the bottom of the valley, not only fill the space,
but going towards the top of the mountain creates a cloud light like a dust,
through which the sun rays that set formed the most beautiful rainbow
that I have never seen…
