  • TRAVELLERS DURING THE CENTURIES #1 THE WATERFALL, A REAL PASSION ! Thanks to the success of the historical fims, an increasing number that see as protagonists Kings and Queens of the Great Britain (from Elizabeth to the speech of King to the latest new Victoria and Abdul), we can imagine them, haughty british monarches while they were climbing on the rocky cliffs, in the middle of thethunderous waters of the Waterfall, exclaiming the typical english expression “it looks like it’s raining cats and dogs!” (Sembra che stiano piovendo anche cani e gatti !). So, it will be easier for us that live nowadays to understand the emotions of the Kings and Queens, even if used to benefit of the splendor, sorrounded by the beautiful, in front of the one of the most Italian marvel. Referring to the memories of the Real House's historic lived in the XIX century, Charles Greville, the Princess of Galles Carolina of Brunswick stayed for a month by Villa Graziani, between Papigno and the Waterfall, hosted by a noble family of the Ternanan Count. Caroline was married since 1795 with the reigning (since 1820) King of the Great Britain, King Giorgio IV. But the woman came to Italy in 1814 with the intention to stay for some years to forget her unhappy wedding: the spouses became obvious that was formally separated since 1796, after the birth of their only daughter. Inthe summer of 1817 came to Terni with her lover, the Milanese manservant Bartolomeo Pergami. In the pages of Voyages and travels of her Majesty, Caroline Queen of Great Britain (1821), we can find the words that enchant the beauty of the Nera Valley, described in detailed way. Worthy of interest also some Ternanan monumetns, as the amphitheatre and other elegant Palaces, as well as the landscape of the Piediluco Lake, so that in the book has been reminded the cerefree hours that the noble woman spent in the so-called Echo Valley (Monte Caperno). Today the "main glory and pride of Terni is however the celebrate Waterfall and its surrondings, that it can be considered as one of the most noble and extraordinary things of this genre, not only in Italy but also in the entire universe". The Holiday at Villa Graziani, so appreciated from Caroline, costed a king's ransom. The sources of that period remembered in fact as Caroline already repudiated from her husband and condammned of adultery in a process right for her idyllic stay in Terni. Saverio Ricci. 5 August 1784
August 05, 2017

  • Gustavo III, king of Sweden since 1771 up to his death in 1792, was a meritorious protector of Arts and Literature, founding the Swedish Academy in 1786 thatnowadays assignes the Nobel Prize for literature. Gustavo has created the Museum of Antiquity, the most ancient Swedish museum that contains the classical works bought by the king during his stays in Italy between the 1783-1784. Right in Italy Gustavo went for the first time in incognito in 1783, concealing behind the name of count Haga, to avoid the risk of fraud. For this reason his personal agent, the son of the famous architect Giambattista Piranesi, mocked his passion for the art works and of the Antiquity:«The count of Haga who see a lot but pay not too much», wrote the king of Sweden. However, the following year Gustavo III came back again in Italy and that time bought several works. Above all several views of landascapes and Italian monuments, today exhibited among the Royal Palace and the National Gallery in Stockholmand the Drottningholm's Castle. In the journey from Loreto to Rome, reached also the Marmore Falls, the day 5 August, as he wrote in his travel diary. We are sure that the king admired the Marmore Waterfall, because we know that in Rome he met the Pope Pio VI, and wetn together to visit the Vatican Museums, as a painting of that period still remembers. Pio VI was the pope who was interested to organise the are of the Waterfall to avoid and to solve the problem of the overflowing and to allow a comfortable visit building expressly the viewpoint "La Specola" that today is the Upper Outlook. The new of the wonderful views of the king in Italy has been widespread the subjects: this is the witness that the Marmore Falls was an attractive site for the future generation of the Swedish artists. For example the painter Carl Johann Billmark felt in love so much with this natural beauty who decided to realise one of the most beautiful etching ever been of the Umbrian landscape, dated back to 1852.
